To respond to continuous gas shortages at Sehr and Iftar in Karachi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stepped in to resolve the disruptions and provide a consistent gas supply during Ramadan. After residents complained of low pressure and interruptions in services particularly during the critical prayer hours, the Prime Minister called an emergency meeting with the top management of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

To mitigate these concerns, SSGC has made a 10% boost in gas pressure in a bid to augment supply at peak hours. The company further made adjustments to gas distribution time to ensure that terminal areas in the distribution network will get the gas 30 to 45 minutes prior to Sehr and Iftar times to address shortages in low network capacity areas.
Apart from this, SSGC has established control rooms at its headquarters and regional offices to keep track of gas supply and respond quickly to complaints about low pressure. The utility has also arranged an additional 20 million cubic feet per day of gas to enhance transmission during peak periods. Meanwhile, SNGPL has promised to follow the Prime Minister’s instructions, keeping gas supplies available uninterruptedly during Ramadan’s holy hours.

The move follows mass complaints of gas supply cuts in localities like Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Nazimabad. While SSGC asserts that 95% of localities have uninterrupted gas supply, locals have complained about the timing of the shortages especially during Iftar.
Sindh Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah also demanded the end of gas load shedding during Ramadan emphasizing the need to solve the issue for the well being of the people.
