Shah Latif University Khairpur Sindh is proud of its renowned researcher Dr. Ghulam Sarwar Markhand who has made the country win an elite award in UAE in the field of agriculture. He was the recipient of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation in the Influential Figure category. United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan presented him the award in a grand award ceremony held at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. Representatives from 66 countries were present at the event.
It is the first time that a Pakistani has been recognised for his contribution to international scientific research in the field of date palm cultivation, said Dr. Markhand. His win over 180 researchers from 28 countries is a moment of national pride.
This achievement was followed with the signing of a new MoU between Pakistan and the UAE to increase agricultural cooperation between the two countries. The MoU is focused on the Organizing of Second Pakistan International Date Palm Festival 2025. The agreement was signed by Pakistan Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain and General Secretary of the Khalifa International Award Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid. Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain said that it is a proof of Pakistan’s commitment to agricultural progress. UAE Minister Sheikh Nahayan commended the efforts of all the award winners for the growth of agricultural innovation.
Pakistan’s Ambassador in UAE Faisal Niaz Tirmizi was also acknowledged for establishing diplomatic and agricultural affairs between Pakistan and the UAE.
