Today on April 12, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck just 60 kilometers northwest of Rawalpindi. The earthquake as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) have a shallow depth of 12 kilometers.
Second Earthquake in a short time also hit many other northern regions.
The National Seismological Centre reported that the first quake was followed shortly by a 4.3 magnitude aftershock. The aftershock which was at a depth of 88 kilometers had its epicenter near the tri border area of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
The tremors were felt widely in the federal capital Islamabad and various cities and towns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab such as Taxila, Wah Cantt, Haripur, Abbottabad and Attock.
Many Islamabad residents and those living in nearby cities posted their experiences on social media by calling the moment both sudden and alarming.
No casualties or structural damage was immediately reported.
NDMA and PDMA have appealed to the public to be calm but alert. Residents in high rise buildings most notably in major cities have been urged to check emergency evacuation plans and stay in touch with official updates.
