Pakistan commemorated the 46th death anniversary of former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto on April 4th. In various parts of the country, the PPP held Quran Khawani and Fateha Khawani etc for his departed soul.
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party described Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as “who laid the foundations for a progressive constitution of Pakistan which ensured democracy and fundamental rights for citizens.” He admired Bhutto’s vision in rebuilding Pakistan particularly after the country’s defeat of 1971. Bilawal said what Bhutto revived the nation with was hope and a roadmap.
Bilawal also praised Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s diplomatic accomplishments including the Simla Agreement which secured 5,000 square miles of territory for Pakistan and resulted in the return of 90,000 war prisoners from India. Bhutto also transformed the economy, agriculture and industries of the country. He empowered the working class and granted them rights through labor and land reforms.
The PPP Chairman also paid tribute to Bhutto’s role in consolidating Pakistan’s defense through nuclear technology and his foreign policy that earned Pakistan respect in the Muslim world as well as internationally. He wrapped up by reaffirming their party commitment to Bhutto’s vision of a democratic, strong and prosperous Pakistan.
PPP secretary general Shazia Marri also paid tribute to Bhutto on the occasion of his death anniversary. She remembered his renowned quote that “people give power” during speech. She added that Bhutto’s ideology did not allow dictatorship in Pakistan and that the people own democracy. Marri reiterated the commitment to continue to follow the ideas of Bhutto, specifically his vision of a just and democratic Pakistan where every citizen was supported to achieve his or her potential.
She said the Supreme Court had recently declared the hanging of late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1979 as illegal. Marri also reminded the gathering that neither General Zia’s dictatorship nor the hanging of Bhutto could destroy the thoughts and legacy of Shaheed Bhutto.
