The federal government has set a maximum annual tuition fee of Rs 1.8 million for MBBS and BDS programs in private medical and dental colleges.
On Thursday, Deputy prime minister Ishaq dar chaired a special committee on medical education which approved new fee regulations.
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) had suggested setting a cap on annual fees.
The committee reviewed and agreed upon those suggestions.
According to new regulations, private medical colleges can charge a maximum of Rs 1.8 million to Rs 2.5 million per year.
Colleges cannot increase fees beyond the inflation rate.
The fee cap will be adjusted every year based on inflation (Consumer Price Index).
This rule will apply to all medical colleges including Agha Khan University.
The government took this initiative to stop unchecked fee hikes as some private medical colleges were charging as much as Rs3.5 million per year.
