In a key decision to set a same time start to Ramadan across Pakistan, the federal government declared that the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee would convene in Peshawar on February 28th 2025 for an official moon sighting.
This decision was taken to settle age-old regional disputes especially between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the rest of the provinces wherein varying reports of moon sighting commonly led to more than one start date of Ramadan.
The meeting will be presided over by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad who will be the final arbiter regarding the sighting, while zonal committees will make parallel observations across the country. The Ministry of Religious Affairs will coordinate arrangements to maintain consensus among clergy for a synchronized observation all over the country.
What is Ramadan Moon Sighting & What Will Be Observed?
The sighting of the moon at Ramadan marks the beginning of fasting for Muslims. The Islamic calendar runs according to the lunar cycle with the sighting of the crescent moon (hilal) representing the beginning of Ramadan. Scholars and committee members will scrutinize the sky, they will make their observations purely by using ancient and modern astronomy. If the moon is sighted, fasting will begin.
