Justice Ali Baqar Najafi has officially become a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He took the oath of office on Wednesday April 16, 2025 in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court in Islamabad. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. The event was attended by fellow Supreme Court judges, the Attorney General, senior lawyers and other legal officials.
Justice Ali Baqar Najafi appointment was approved by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) with a majority vote. President Asif Ali Zardari formalized the appointment through an official notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The official notification from presidency states that:
“In exercise of the powers conferred under clause (1) of Article 177 read with clause (8) of Article 175A of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President of Pakistan, is pleased to appoint Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, judge, LHC, as judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan with effect from the date he makes oath of his office” .
Prior to this new appointment, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi was serving as judge of the Lahore High Court. He is also known for supervising the judicial inquiry into the 2014 Model Town incident.
The total number of judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 26 with this new induction in the office.
